1887 pr of letters from Herbert Vacher. One written aboard S.S. Imuana on 22 October of 36 sides in length, the other from Hotel Der Nederlande at Batavia 20 sides in length. Covering the period 23 to 31 October detailing his journey to Thursday Island & Papua. Incredible details. Mentions reefs, sand banks, Mission Stations, Yule Island, Port Moresby, Mail Boats, travelling on Pearl Ship Nautilus & his stay in Java. Posted in Egypt in tatty linen lined env. Other correspondence from this man, believed to be the earliest known item posted from Papua, was previously sold in a London auction for many £1000s. Important historical items, but difficult to determine value.
