1854-59 Large Diadems 6d imperforate plate proof in purple-brown on ungummed unwatermarked paper, close even margins, very fine 'CANCE[LLED]' Handstamp at U/R, Cat £15,000. Ex Ric Slade-Slade, Peter Jaffé, and 'Alvarado': sold for £7800. [Position 5 from the original block of 6]
Six examples each of the so-called 'Ormond Hill Specimens' were produced by Perkins Bacon for all of 'their' Colonies at the request of Rowland Hill's nephew and gifted to him, action that resulted in the Agent for the Crown Colonies terminating Perkins Bacon's printing contracts. 75 different stamps were involved, of 20 British Colonies and four stamps of Chile. The 'CANCELLED' h/s was applied to blocks of 6 that were later separated, often with scissors or a blade, resulting in many of the individual stamps being cut-into or having trimmed perfs on one or more sides. [NB: for NSW no issued stamps were available so plate proofs retained by the printers were utilised]
1854-59 Large Diadems 8d imperforate plate proofs on unwatermarked paper in grey-blue (large margins, ungummed) & in yellow (margins close to large, a little soiled, large-part o.g.)
1854-59 Large Diadems 8d golden-yellow SG 97, margins good to large, small concealed tear at L/R, lightly cancelled clear of the Queen's face, Cat £1600. Despite the fault, this is a very attractive example that would satisfy most collectors, especially at the bargain price. RPSofL Certificate (1993).
1854-59 Large Diadems 1/- imperforate plate proof in deep blue on ungummed unwatermarked paper, close even margins, very fine 'CANC[ELLED]' Handstamp at U/R, Cat £15,000. Ex Ric Slade-Slade, Peter Jaffé, and 'Alvarado': sold for £7800. [Position 5 from the original block of 6]
For New South Wales, only plate proofs for the 6d in purple-brown - five recorded - and the 1/- in blue - four recorded - have been identified, making NSW one of the most difficult Colonies from which to acquire an example. The Royal Collection includes one of each.
1856-60 Imperf Small Diadems 2d blue Error of Watermark '5' SG 112c horizontal strip of 3, almost full margins but just shaved at the base of the middle unit and at L/R of the R/H unit, Cat £210+. A very scarce multiple.
1856-60 Imperf Small Diadems 3d dull green SG 117, margins good to large with a fragment of the adjoining stamp at right, large-part (aged) o.g., Cat £1900.
