6d on folded letter to RHODE ISLAND USA, each tied with B 64
numeral cancellations applied for use by postal officials in
Seychelles, and with Seychelles, London and New York (December)
transits, one of only three covers known from Zanzibar sent via the
Seychelles bearing Mauritius stamps, this being the earliest one
recorded and hence the first cover from Zanzibar bearing adhesives
for prepaid delivery, sometime in the 1860 the Sultan of Zanzibar
inaugurated his own mail service by private sloop, later a naval
vessel to Mahe to link up with MM LINE 2 variant as Zanzibar was
experiencing problems in getting the mails to and from Europe, a
couple of missionary covers and a few commercial items are known
from East Africa, taken unstamped to Mahe where current stamps were
af?xed and cancelled B - 64. Also recorded are a batch of covers to
Zanzibar from the US which transited from Europe to Mauritius and
there transferred to the Mahe mail bag, and then to Zanzibar by the
Sultans service. It is not known exactly when this service was
inaugurated or terminated, but the service probably lasted about
seven or eight years, the Universities Mission archives note that
Mauritius adhesives were the only stamps available in this time
frame, the receiver RUFUS GREEN (Company) began trading in Zanzibar
in 1852 and were an important player in breaking the near monopoly
held by Salems traders for trade between the US and Zanzibar,
