Mauritius, 1854, used in SEYCHELLES, 16 JUNE 1854 from MAHE, on folded letter to ROME,prepayed 1s to Alexandria, the letter was carried to MAURITIUS red oval PACKET LETTER MAURITIUS to confirm carriage by P O British packed to SUEZ. after travelling overland route to ALEXANDRIA the letter was placed on board the P O packet-steamer VECTIS and disembarked in MARSEILLE on 16 SEPT where the datestamp INDES OS MARSEILLE was strucked, in Marseille the letter was placed onboard the French packetboat BOSPHORE and was disembarked in Civitavecchia on 22 Sept 54 was charged on delivery in Rome as required for a double rate letter from a location beyond Suez and prepaid to Alexandria Egypt, disinfected in Malta, with 2 slits, neatly cancelled by bared oval numeral B 6X, exceedingly rare entire and a magnificent showpiece, VF-XF! Mauritius, 1869, used in ZANZIBAR, 1 d. purple brown and 9 d. dull purple, on envelope to LONDON, reverse tied with SEYCHELLS 15 MR 69, neatly cancelled by bared oval numeral B 64, with m/s note ANNIE JONES/ZANZIBAR/FEB 1869 of origin, one of only three covers known from Zanzibar sent via the Seychelles bearing Mauritius stamps for pre paid delivery, sometime in the 1860 the Sultan of Zanzibar inaugurated his own mail service by private sloop, later a naval vessel to Mahe to link up with MM LIGNE 2 variant as Zanzibar was experiencing problems in getting the mails to and from Europe, a couple of missionary covers and a few commercial items are known from East Africa, taken unstamped to Mahe where current stamps were af?xed and cancelled B - 64. Also recorded are a batch of covers to Zanzibar from the US which transited from Europe to Mauritius and there transferred to the Mahe mail bag, and then to Zanzibar by the Sultans service. It is not known exactly when this service was inaugurated or terminated, but the service probably lasted about seven or eight years, the Universities Mission archives note that Mauritius adhesives were the only stamps available in this time frame, exceedingly rare entire and a magnificent showpiece, certificate BPA, VF-XF!
