Chiswell, Tamatave, Madagascar at 10d. rate by 4d. vermilion pl. 11 and 6d. mauve pl. 8 tied by Chatham, Kent July 8 duplexes, with large blue “6d./TO PAY” and red “1d”, Seychelles Aug. 31 and Mauritius Oct. 1 transit backstamps, redirected with note “Gone to/Mauritius”and showing Mauritius 6d. blue-green added and cancelled by fine “B53” barred oval with Nov. 7 return backstamp, slight creasing. S.P.G. missionary Rev. Alfred Chiswell (1844-), first author of a complete version of the the Book of Common Prayer into Malagasy, was stationed at Tamatave from 1867 to 1872 and later at Antananarivo, having been appointed archdeacon of Madagascar in 1875.
