Leeward Islands. Maritime Mail. R.M.S. Solent: 1898 (21 Jan.) envelope to Manchester bearing 1890 2½d. cancelled by manuscript "Solent" in red, marked "Consignee of RMS" and with indistinct St. Lucia (21.1) c.d.s., the reverse with Manchester arrival (2.2). This is believed to be the earliest Solent cover recorded. Also 1890 1d. single with a similar cancellation (defective corner). Photo. .
Note: S.S. Solent mail is recorded used between 1898 (21 Jan.) to 1903 (31 July). This boat entered service in 1878 and was based in Barbados (Image1)

Solent: 1899 (29 Sept.) 1d. postal stationery envelope to London cancelled by a bold and very legible "Solent" in red ink with handstruck "solent" in purple below, the reverse with a fine strike of Castries St. Lucia despatch and London arrival c.d.s. (12.10); the flap with a repaired tear, otherwise fresh and fine. Believed to be the earliest of only four covers bearing this straight-line handstamp. Photo
