INLAND OFFICE COMMON CROSS USE AFTER INTRODUCTION OF THE NUMBERED CROSSES - Mar. 1843 group (4) of covers inc. 28 Mar. 1843 EL/E to Worcester with fine four margin 1d red or to Newport, Salop with a fine three margin pair of 1d reds, all cancelled with common crosses after the introduction of number 3 (on 16 March) and the remaining numbers to 6 (by 22 March). Also 30 May 1843 1d pink env. London to Bristol cancelled with a common cross, being the earliest known such after introduction of the full set of twelve numbered crosses (and possibly demonstrating the provision of a new common cross to the Inland Office to meet postal demand). Plus 17 Mar. 1843 1d pink env. used within London cancelled with common cross at the Inland Office (Inland cds on the back) then directed to the District Office (new ds applied to the back) and 7 May 1844 EL to Cheadle with Inland Office cds on the flap and 1d red tied by common MX. . VERY SCARCE & UNUSUAL COMMON CROSS USED AT THE INLAND OFFICE AFTER INTRODUCTION OF THE NUMBERED CROSSES - 22 Mar. 1843 env. (partly opened out for display, pinholes away from the stamp) to Edinburgh with a four margin 1d red tied by a common MX, but with datestamp of the London Inland Office on the back for 22 March, LASSWADE ds on the back; by this date the 1 to 6 numbered crosses were in use and less than a handful of such common Inland Office MX covers are known between 22-31 March 1843.
