10/- grey & pink John Ash Imprint block of 4 ACSC 49z, very light almost imperceptible vertical fold through gutter, mounted at the top across the gutter, the lower units are unmounted, Cat $12,500+ for a mounted block. Superb. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2011). Provenance: 'Goldfarm', Lot 3129, sold for US$7185. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue does not list the number of recorded imprint blocks. We are aware of the following: Jack Kilfoyle, sold for £32 (plus an extraordinary postally used imprint block that failed to sell); Arthur Gray, sold for US$5462; Lord Cornwallis, sold for £6980, and again in 'Besancon' Part I for SFr6050; The Morgan Collection, sold for £5760; Stuart Hardy, sold for $5825; Julian Sterling, sold for $8235; and 'Goldmine', sold for $4530. Including this item, that makes a total of only eight mint blocks known to us in private hands. All the blocks have similar centring; the variation in prices is directly referrable to the number of unmounted units. Only the Lord Cornwallis/'Besancon' block is perforated through the lower margin.

Cat No:114

£2 grey-black & rose-carmine ACSC 57A (SG 114) marginal block of 12 [L1-6/7-12] being the top two rows from the left-hand pane with Pos [L1] Horizontal Colour Flaw above Bight and Pos [L2] Colour Dot above Bight (both listed by William Holbeach), Pos [L3] Very Short Spencer Gulf ACSC 57(D)d, Pos [L10] Ewe-Faced Kangaroo (Second State) ACSC 57(V)fa, Pos [L11] Fencepost (Colour Flaw) at Left of Grass ACSC 57(V)g and several units with unlisted Shaved/Damaged Top of 2 in '£2', some minor black marks on the face apparently residue from an over-inked printing of the vignette, and these hardly detract, nor does a small blue mark on the gum of the third unit, two small hinge remainders in the top margin but the stamps themselves are wholly unmounted, Cat $240,000+ for unmounted singles plus a premium for the varieties (£54,000+ for mounted singles). Superb. Provenance: CF Bulley 'Besancon' Part II, Lot 3662, sold for SFr36,300. Melbourne leather merchant CF Bulley formed an important but today little-known collection of Commonwealth of Australia that included a complete left-hand pane of 60 of the Small Multiple Watermark Two Pounds. At the Bulley sale in London in 1961, the pane was acquired by Sydney retail dealer Ken Baker. Baker split the pane into a block of 36 (6x6) acquired by Stuart Hardy, and two blocks of 12 (6x2), that were sold to Dr Leslie Abramovitch and an unnamed English collector. Stuart Hardy's multiple was later relieved of three blocks of 4, leaving a still impressive block of 24 that sold for $227,175. These two results highlight the difference between catalogue values in a general reference such as the Stanley Gibbons 'Part 1' - which quotes prices for hinged stamps in the pre-KGVI period and simply states that the premium for unmounted "will vary from issue to issue" - and in the Australian Commonwealth Specialtists' Catalogue which quotes prices for both mounted and unmounted stamps, the latter always being greater, and often considerably higher. For the Small Multiple Watermark £2 the differential is more than 2½ times. It is not clear if this is the Abramovitch block or not, but one of the blocks of 12 has been further divided, leaving this as the second-largest surviving block in private hands.

Cat No:Collection

£2 grey-black & rose-carmine John Ash Imprint block of 4 ACSC 57z, quite well centred especially the left-hand units, the upper-left being about as well centred as is obtainable for this stamp, light vertical fold through the gutter, hinge remainder in the lower margin, the top units very lightly mounted, the lower units are unmounted, Cat $125,000+ for a mounted block. Superb! Provenance: Jack Kilfoyle, Lot 266, sold for £170. 'Chartwell', Lot 603, sold for £60,000. The similar blocks in the Arthur Gray and Stuart Hardy collections sold for US$109,250 and $72,810 respectively. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue states "Imprint blocks of 4 are extremely rare, with only three known to be extant, one of which is in the Australian National Philatelic Collection". This block is different from both the Gray and Hardy blocks and is therefore additional to the ACSC count.
