1/- deep dull green Plate 1 Inserted 'CA' Monogram single ACSC 31D(1)za, very well centred, neat 'ALEXANDRIA/ 29MR16/NSW' cds, Cat $9000 for mounted mint in a normal shade (unpriced used). A rare postal usage, made all the more desirable for the scarce shade which the ACSC prices at $1500 for a used single, compared with $100 for a normal shade. Provenance: Status International auction of 7.9.2017, Lot 1083, sold for $8940. Far more attractive than Arthur Gray's untidily cancelled similar stamp that sold for US$1910. The ACSC generally does not price used monograms; where it does, this is invariably for CTO, as in the case of the First Watermark 5/- where CTO is priced at approximately 75% of the mounted mint price. We contend that postally used monograms as a class are scarcer (and arguably more attractive) than their CTO equivalents, and should be priced as such where known.

Cat No:30w

5/- grey & chrome-yellow with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 43Ba (SG 30w) and the Kangaroo Slightly Misplaced into the Great Australian Bight, marginal example from the top of the sheet, exceptional centring, unmounted, Cat $6500 for a normal unmounted stamp or $2000 for the variety mounted (£1300+ for the variety mounted). The ACSC does not price the inverted watermark as unmounted. Superb. Probably the finest example we have offered. Provenance: Private transaction. NB: although the the misplacement of the Kangaroo is obvious, it is not significant enough, by reference to the Australian Commonwealth Sprecialists' Catalogue definition, to qualify as a listed variety. However, this stamp is as close to a Misplaced Kangaroo as one might hope to find on the Second Watermark 5/-. The ACSC records only one example, with a 3½mm misplacement out of the map at upper-left, and it is used (ACSC 43ca, Cat $7500).
