2d scarlet Postal Forgery Perf 11 on gummed unwatermarked paper ACSC 103cc, unusually well centred, full unmounted o.g., Cat $1500. One of the finest 'mint' singles we have seen. [See also Lot 301005]
OVERPRINTED 'OS': ½d orange with the Overprint Inverted ACSC 69(OS)c (SG O128a) being from an Official Substitution in the top row of the sheet before being overprinted, in marginal vertcal 'pair' with a normal stamp and joined with tiny official repair tabs at top and base, CTO with Brisbane cds and virtually full o.g., Cat $25,000+ (£22,000+). Superb! Ex 'Besancon' (II) - sold for SFr16,940 - & 'Artemis'. RPSofL Certificate (1979).
The ACSC states that only two mint examples are recorded, one not seen "for many years", and the other institutionalised. Fourteen CTO examples have been recorded, comprising a strip of 6 (!), a strip of 4 used on cover (!!), and four single stamps (including in the format here), to which must be added the 'Pericles' stamp in a pane of 60! Examples from the Arthur Gray, Stuart Hardy and 'Pericles' collections sold for $25,390 $27,960 and $26,235 respectively.
