FRANCE/JERSEY - UNIQUE(?) 4d ROSE-CARMINE FORWARDING LETTER FOUND IN JERSEY IN A NEWSPAPER; Extraordinary 6 Mar. 1858 EL Paris to Elbeuf with French 20c Blue but no Paris markings, accidentally caught up in a newspaper that took it to Jersey! Inside the letter, a "Frances Fisher" has added a note in French "found this letter open, with three papers inside, slipped between the pages of a 'Galignani's Messenger' that I received yesterday from my mother...". The helpful Ms. Fisher endorsed it "Via St. Malo" (v. fine red "ILES-C/ST. MALO" cds on the front) and added a G.B. 4d Rose-Carmine over the uncancelled French 20c Blue which is tied by Jersey "409" Numeral, red oval "P-D." alongside and black "JERSEY" cds on the back. It is amazing that this very Missent cover reached its correct addressee and in good time! Unique story? [Ex Spink 18 July 2002 auction, lot 1078; £350 +BP.] Also 1854 EL to San Francisco paid '2/5' cash for the double rate plus 1d red imperf (doesn't belong) paying a late fee with confirming "GLASGOW/L" udc alongside; rare total rate of 2/6.
