DAMAGED MAIL: 1895 (Feb 22) large OHMS packet piece from England with 'LONDON/OFFICIAL/PAID' cds in red & a superb strike of the very rare circular 'BRISBANE/RECEIVED/TORN/QUEENSLAND' h/s, minor creasing. We know of only two other examples of this distinctive handstamp. [A remarkably fine 'damaged' article]
DEFICIENT POSTAGE: 1865 (July) overweight cover to Rockhampton with Chalons 2d pair tied by faint but legible Rays '14' of 'NULALBIN' (light b/s; rated RRRRR - LRD) & 'ROCKHAMPTON' arrival b/s, rare manuscript endorsement "Deficient postage 4d/Fine 4d" & "8", minor blemishes. Ex Hugh Campbell - see his page 111 - & Richard Stevenson: acquired for SFr944; The Stevenson catalogue stated Campbell had a similar cover but it is clearly the same item. PO 1.7.1861; Joan Frew states Nullabin replaced by Knebworth 1.1.1864 but that is contradicted by this cover. [700km NNW of Brisbane]
LOOSE SHIP LETTER: 1875 (Jan) cover to Victoria with Chalons 2d tied by 'QL-in-Rays of Brisbane (cds alongside), largely very fine oval 'LOOSE/SHIP/LETTER' h/s, Melbourne transit & 'WILLIAMSTOWN' arrival b/s, a bit grotty.
LOOSE SHIP LETTER: 1886 (May) underpaid coastal shipping cover with Second Sidefaces Lined Background 2d only cancelled by oval-of-bars, Brisbane cds at L/L & superb 'LOOSE/SHIP/LETTER' h/s, the short-payment of 1d plus the 1d late fee was not noted.
MONEY ORDERS: 1897 stampless OHMS cover with 'Money Order Office/No 1' imprint at L/L & very fine strike of the rare double-oval 'MONEY ORDER OFFICE/6FEB97/BRISBANE' d/s in blue, 'WOOLLOONGABBA' arrival b/s, adhesions on the reverse & some soiling.
