India 1856 Jul 1 single weight bearing folded letter to UK via Southampton franked with 1a red die I imperf pair + single, each tied by "B/121", "BARH P.O./1 JL 1856" dispatch, "PATNA P.O./8 JUL 1856", "CAL G.P.O.", boxed "INDIA" transits, "PORTOBELLO SE 5 1856" and "SEP 5 1856" arrival cds in red, redirected with "South Fourth Street not the Sixth" m.s. "6" in ms on front indicating 6d due from recipient. 3a was unnecessarily applied to pay the overland rate to Bombay for letters weighing between 1 and 1½ tolas. Inland postage was to be included in the steam postage from Feb 1856 but this was not fully promulgated to internal non contract port POs and was paid to avoid the letter being returned as inland postage unpaid.
