1851 (Nov.), envelope (POSSIBLY ORIGINATING FROM CHINA) to Rochester,New York ,USA (09.Feb) ms "Overland Mail via Southampton ", red London "Paid, 16 JA 1852" tombstone, ms " paid 2Sh ". Partial,lightly struck "Paid at Hong Kong" Crowned Circle h.s. in red (Webb type 8). "Br Packet/Boston/9 Feb" exchange office postmark and manuscript "due 5" for inland transmission. rated "1/8" . Reverse with "Hong Kong" double-arc date stamp (13.Nov). On reverse ms sender initials "M.B.W“. A repaired tear at mid top. Very fine and scarce usage to the USA .

1860. Envelope written from London addressed to 'Rev. C. J. Armistead, "H.M.S. Melville", Hong Kong, China' bearing Great Britain SG 40, 1d rose-red, SG 45, 2d blue and SG 68, 6d lilac tied by Leeds/147 duplex 'Oc 9 60' endorsed 'via Marseille' with Hong Kong/C single arc date stamp (Webb Type 12) and m/s 'Rec 25 Nov 60' on face. Very scarce item paying the prepaid 9d ¼ oz rate via Marseille, Suez and Galle addressed to 'H.M.S. Melville' served from 1817 until 1857 when she was converted to a hospital ship stationed at Hong Kong during the Second Opium War. the Rev. C.J. Armistead was her ships chaplain during the war. (Very few covers are known with this very rare Hong Kong cds as a dispatch or receiving cancel. This example the latest date known in Webb or Proud).
