1941 Hong Kong 15c, 5c tied by Victoria cds (7 DEC 41) on cover to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, large boxed handstamp “DETAINED IN HONG KONG / BY JAPANESE / FROM DECEMBER 1941 TO SEPTEMBER 1945”, reverse with triangular purple “PASSED BY CENSOR 137”. The cover contains a greeting card with ms “Major K G Baird The Winnipeg Grenadiers Force C Canadian Army Overseas” and has a short message to Orville for the new year. Major Baird, 1st Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers was in charge of a reinforcement unit, Wan Chai Gap. He was a POW at Shamshuipo, North Point and Argyle Street and received the Colonial Auxillary Forces Long Service medal. His information is available at the Hong Kong Veterans Association website including a picture of him. Also accompanying the cover is a copy of the Mutual Life Assurance publications “The Agent’s Bulletin” which tells his story of service, capture and repatriation. The issue is dated October 1945 and illustrates both the cover and Christmas card.Mailed the day before the Battle of Hong Kong and detained until the war was over. (Image)
