Hong Kong, Paid Circular h.s: 1882 (9 Jan.) O.H.M.S. envelope to Foochow (4 (sic?).1 Br. P.O.) showing "Paid" circular h.s. in red and "Hong Kong/G" c.d.s. adjacent, endorsed "not known at Foochow", the earliest recorded date for the handstamp per Proud.

The circular "Paid" handstamp was used on official mail, as well as circulars, invitations, cards, patterns, bills, almanacs, etc. for addresses in Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports (but not Macau) sent to the Post Office in batches of not less than ten of uniform size and weight unstamped. Postage at the rate of one cent each was paid in cash or charged to the sender's account.
