The Assistance eventually became the Hospital Ship for all the wounded... I was there for three months...". He ends "(6 May); the preparations for our expedition are now nearly complete; Kowloon... presents an interesting spectacle with the Sikh Cavalry and the Regiments encamped. We expect to sail on the 17th. Chusan was quietly taken possession of by our Marines...". Fine and historical cover. Cross Reference : NEW SOUTH WALES, QUEENSLAND, MILITARY (Image)

The letter gives a rare account of a recent assault on a town near Shanghai that was held by the rebels; "We left the ship at Woosung on Octr. 20th and went to Shanghai... I being in charge of a Company of Small arm men... On the morning of the 22nd we started up the creek in the direction of Kahding... [via] Nahryian... the following morning we moved on to Kahding... during the afternoon I went up & had a look at the rebels & exchanged some musket shots with them... at 5 a.m.... moved up towards the town... two breaches were made & the place stormed soon after, I got with a bridge party to the ditch... the rebels made some good shots, but our whole loss was only 3 killed & 38 wounded (2 or 3 mortally)...". Campaign letters from this period are much rarer than those from the 2nd Opium War. Cross Reference : MILITARY, CHINA (Image)
