1875: outer of entire letter franked with strip for four 2 1/2 d plate 1 (JE - JH), tied by LONDON SP 11 /% duplexes to Marseilles. The postal rate is tripple per 1/2 oz (2 d x 3 = 9 d) plus 1 d late fee. A rare franking even more so to France at a time when the 2 1/2 d per 1/2 oz was not applicable to France - covers with 2 1/2 d to France are encountered after 1st January 1876 when France implemented GPU postal rates. AFRICA SP 28 00, addressed to Wembly, Middx, with transit REGISTERED LONDON 28 00 OCT and arrival backstamp WEMBLEY OC 29 00. The 1 Sh red/green is scarce on cover, multiples are most elusive, and this is the only reported cover bearing a multiple of this stamp with no other stamp present. (Image)
