1840, "ONE PENNY" black and "TWO PENCE" blue, the first-ever definitives in very scarce mint hinged (No.1) and mint without gum (No.2) condition. No.1 stems from plate 4, nearly all margins are full except for a minimal touch at the bottom right. No.2 stems from plate 1, full margins on all four sides - gum not original. Both values show clear watermarks. A very fine ensemble of these rarities in extremely fresh appearance. Stanley Gibbons value: 31.500 GBP. 1882, £5 orange, vertical pair lettered "AM"-"AN", fresh colour and well perforated, each stamp obliterated by clear full centric strike of oval "REGISTERED THREADNEEDLE St. B.O. E.C. 18 AP 99", slight unobstrusive vertical crease. Top stamp showing variety "Line over top right 'I' square broken and line under 'M' square thin and broken" which occurs on the stamps of late printings. 1840 (6 Nov.), printed letter from Ship & Insurance brokers Wm. Law Ogilby & Moore in London insuring a shipping by the "Argo" from Swansea to Emsworth and/or Havant, sent to Havant and franked by two singles 1d. black (lettered E/G and E/I) tied by red Maltese Crosses, with double boxed handstamp "POSTED AFTER/6 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT" in red alongside, red "EX/6 NO 6/1840" despatch c.d.s. on the reverse. The two Penny Black with partially cut into design and a violet note and scratches on front otherwise fine.
