Gilbert and Ellice Islands: The 1916 Funafuti Provisionals: 1912 Key Plate 1d. carmine surcharged "2/-" twice in black ink, mint with horizontal bend at top. Produced by the District Officer during a shortage of stamps at the Funafuti post office in July 1916 to satisfy a need for the franking of parcels which were to be carried on the steamer "Dawn" via Apia and Sydney. Although officially unauthorised these provisionals satisfied a genuine need and are of the greatest rarity, just eight examples of the 2/- in black on 1d. having been created and six used.
