Gambia: 1886-93 Watermark Crown CA sideways 1d. crimson, used on 1896 (Dec. 21) envelope addressed to P. Strickland on Gorée island, Senegal, cancelled by "BATHURST" c.d.s., backstamped Gorée arrival, some minor staining, otherwise fine. Peter Strickland (1837-1921), U.S. Consul to Senegal (the first in West Africa) carried out his official duties without a salary but was allowed to maintain a private export-import business and keep the consular fees charged to the captains of American ships calling at Senegalese ports.
