At the outbreak of the First World War he was placed in command with the rank of Major of the Falkland Island Defence Force and was indefatigable in his efforts to prepare efficient land defences. In 1915, feeling he would be of more practical use in Europe, he joined the R.A.M.C. and served the Royal Flying Corps in France as part of the 4/11th Field Ambulance.
