Falkland Islands: Early Mail and Documents: 1862 Great Britain 1d. pink postal stationery envelope sent from Southwell, Notts. addressed to Rev. John Ogle in London, cancelled by barred oval with Sept. 2 despatch and next day arrival backstamps. Rev. John Furniss Ogle (1823-1865) arrived in the Falkland Islands on Aug. 30 1856 as an unpaid volunteer but left the Patagonian Mission after a sharp disagreement with George Pakenham Despard, the Mission Superintendent. An attempt to organise his own mission on Picton Island in the Beagle Channel proved unsuccessful and in July 1857 he returned to England. Ogle drowned at sea in the wreck of the “Borysthène” off the coast of Algeria in 1865 and a compilation of his letters was first published in 1873. Photo. (Image1)
