Falkland Islands: 1871 (Jan. 30) unpaid envelope with full contents to George Bulkley of Southport, Connecticut, U.S.A., carried on board the Government schooner "Foam" to Montevideo, from there on the P.S.N.C. vessel "Nemesis" and finally from Liverpool to New York on Cunard's "Java", with London M.L. "MR/18/71" transit in red on reverse, marked "26" in blue pencil with "NEW YORK/MAR/30/31 U.S. NOTES" depreciated currency c.d.s. (Hubbard & Winter 454) and pencil "31cts Due" Manuscript endorsement at left records "Fm Cpt Nugent at/Stanley, Falkland/Is/ends Jany 30/71". With most interesting original enclosed letter headed "Stanley F.I./Jany. 30th 1871", written by Captain Richard M.D. Nugent, skipper of the "Lookout" to its owner and invoice for repairs. Heijtz certificate (2017). Ex Cottis. Photo. The "Lookout" called into Stanley in Oct. 1870 for repairs and was at time still re-cargoing, "We have to lay a long way from the settlement in consequence of having powder on board" and was able to continue its voyage on Feb. 16 1871. Falkland Islands: 1871 large piece from incoming packet letter showing fine strike "JU 23/1871" of the type F.1 receiving c.d.s., addressed to "The Receiver of Wreck/Stanley/Falkland Islands", dated May 8 and endorsed "Per "Oneida"with printed heading of the "Association for the Protection of Commercial Interests as respects Wrecked and Damaged Property" (later, and more succinctly, known as "The Salvage Association"). Falkland Islands: THE BLACK FRANK, 1874 (Jan. 2) fine strike on envelope to Mrs. James White at Smeeth, near Ashford, Kent, carried on the "Black Hawk" and the "Boyne", with ms. "6" alongside Frank, red London Paid of Feb. 13 below and type 1 "JA 2/1874" despatch c.d.s at lower left, backstamped Feb. 13 arrival. Barnes 1/74. Ex Cottis. Photo. This the first of three surviving covers addressed between Jan. 1874 and May 1877 to Elizabeth (n̩e Clare, born c.1818 in Weymouth, Dorset), wife of estate carpenter James White (1826-1903). The sender is unknown but there appears to be no direct connection to Emily Grace Lee (1832-1913, n̩e White, born in Starcross, Devon), wife of Port Howard shepherd Jacob Lee (1828-1912). (Image1)

Falkland Islands: THE BLACK FRANK, 1876 (Aug. 15) envelope with official embossed Arms on reverse addressed to Henry Moncrieff in London by postmaster George Travis with initials at lower left, showing fair strike of the Black Frank with F.1 despatch c.d.s. and prepaid rating "6" in magenta, backstamped by Sept. 29 arrival c.d.s. Carried on the "Black Hawk" to Montevideo and onward to Liverpool on the "Cotopaxi". Barnes 6/76. B.P.A. certificate (1974). Ex Riddell-Carre. Photo. Four 'Frank' covers are known addressed to Henry Anderson 'Harry' Moncrieff (1850-1933), the first (Barnes 3/73) likely from a friend on board H.M.S. "Cossack" who adopts the "Moncreaff" spelling of the surname preferred by Moncrieff's father. The others are from Travis, addressed to Moncrieff, publishing manager for Messrs. Rivington, at his business address. This is the latest recorded usage of the Black Frank on overseas mail, just one other cover sharing this date. (Image1)

Coleman, Secretary of the Falkland Islands Company in London, with good to fine strike of the Frank, showing prepaid rating "6" in magenta, type F.1 despatch c.d.s. and red London Paid July 1 arrival, opening tear at left. Carried on the "Black Hawk" to Montevideo and thence to Southampton on the "Mondego". Barnes 15/78. B.P.A. certificate (1969) Ex Riddell-Carre. Photo. Falkland Islands: •ÈÀCONCESSIONARY SOLDIERS' AND SEAMEN'S RATES, 1893 mourning envelope addressed to Devon, endorsed at top sent by "W. Crocker, Stoker. HMS Sirius, Port Stanley" with countersignature initials at lower left, bearing G.B. 1d. lilac cancelled on arrival in England by "F.B." barred oval having been despatched on the "Tanis" on Mar. 13, with Plymouth Apr. 14 receiving backstamp, creased and slight soiling but very rare. Ex Heijtz and Cottis. Photo. In accordance with G.P.O. Notice no. 7 (Mar. 7 1882) "Letters to or from Soldiers & Sailors serving abroad . . can be sent through the Post for 1d. provided they do not exceed 1/2oz in weight. The name rank etc. must be stated and when sent by a Soldier or a Sailor, the Commanding Officer must sign his name." The "Sirius" was in harbour at Stanley from Jan. 8 to Mar. 17 1893. One of only two known concessionary rate covers sent from the islands. (Image1)
