Falkland Islands: 1939 Battle of the River Plate, cover from Sub. Lt. Richard Moore to his mother in Devon with enclosed five page letter on H.M.S. "Ajax" stationery dated "22.11.38" describing his social life on the islands, bearing G.B. 11/2d. cancelled by London Jan. 7 1939 "RECEIVED FROM/H.M. SHIPS" receiving machine cancellation. Ex Cottis. Photo. H.M.S. "Ajax" was the flagship of Force G in the hunt for the "Admiral Graf Spee". During the engagement off the estuary of the River Plate the "Ajax" suffered moderate damage but went on to make major contributions during the Battles of Crete and Malta and as a supply escort in the Siege of Tobruk. Robert H̦pfner, with cachets. KorvettenkapitÌ_n H̦pfner, said to be the only Spanish speaking officer from the "Graf Spee", fell ill during his internment and was permitted to work at the embassy with intelligence officer Dietrich Niebuhr, believed to have been the principal organiser of the many escapes by members of the crew.
