Foreign rate to U.S.A., addressed by Arthur G. Bennett to R. Cushman-Murphy in New York and carried to Stanley on the Norwegian whaler "Thor" with PS.1B Apr. 13 transit on reverse. Ex Cottis. Photo. American ornithologist Robert Cushman Murphy (1887-1973), later Lamont Curator of Birds at the American Museum of Natural History, participated in numerous oceanic expeditions, being a noted expert on marine birds. In 1912-13 he served on the whaling brig "Daisy" to further his researches on the east cost of South America and South Georgia during which he charted the Bay of Isles and other parts of the island. In 1960 he returned to Antarctica with Operation Deepfreeze. Murphy's petrel was named in his honour as were Mount Murphy in Antarctica and Murphy Wall in South Georgia. (Image1)
