(slightly oxidised) tied by fine type B1 “DECEPTION ISLAND/23 JAN 1918/SOUTH SHETLANDS” double oval datestamp in violet with additional strike below and Apr. 16 arrival on reverse. Bennett had complained that the damp, sulphurous atmosphere of the island, combined with fumes from the processing of whale carcasses was causing his supply of Falkland Islands stamps to change colour. Herbert James Lempriere Hallowes (1912-1987) later distinguished himself as a pilot during the Battle of Britain, his multiple kills including a share in the downing of a Heinkel He 111 on Feb. 3 1940, the first enemy aircraft to crash on English soil in the war, and subsequently rising to the rank of Wing Commander. With photocopy of later letter from White recording that he had requested the creation of these scarce covers through the service of “the Capt of a whaling vessel which puts into Dartmouth each year for coaling”.
