Mossop in Lincolnshire, cancelled on the second day of operation of the Port Lockroy post office, Port Stanley Mar. 6 transit on reverse, horizontal fold. Ex Cottis. Photo. John Mossop was a specialist lawyer employed in the Admiralty's military branch for his expertise in international law. He has, together with the Foreign Office's chief polar adviser Dr. Brian Roberts, been credited with the suggestion of the "Tabarin" codename (see "The Royal Navy and German Naval Disarmament 1942-47" by Chris Madsen and "Pink Ice: Britain and the South Atlantic Empire" by Klaus J. Nattriss in Essex, franked South Orkneys Overprint 1d. tied by C1 c.d.s. on board the "Fitzroy" whilst in South Orkneys territorial waters and backstamped Port Stanley Mar. 6 transit, where resealed by "Opened by Censor." label (type a, 84mm. inscription). Ex Cottis. Photo. Ernest Alfred Nattriss (1882-1960), head of the General Stores Dept. for the Crown Agents for the Colonies, had been awarded the O.B.E. in 1934 for his services as Shipreping Officer to the 'Discovery' Committee. Nattriss was involved in the planning of the Tabarin operation from the earliest stages, with particular responsibility for the production of the overprinted stamp issues. (Image1)
