Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: Hope Bay Base D 1946 (Dec. 6) Army air letter form W.3077 locally overprinted “FALKLAND ISLANDS AND DEPENDENCIES” in small type and franked by Thick Map 9d. pair cancelled light D1 c.d.s’s in blue, with interesting message sent by meteorologist Tom P. O’Sullivan to his mother in London and collected by SS “Fitzroy” on Jan. 22 1947 with Port Stanley Feb. 6 transit on reverse. The 1s.6d. rate ended on Oct. 12 1945 but this change was likely not communicated to the bases in their midwinter when no ships could visit for several more months, and the news may have been at first overlooked thereafter. Very few examples of the 1s.6d. rate are known, none at the 9d. rate being recorded in the 1946-47 season. Photo. (Image1)
