Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: 1947 (Feb. 7) Army air letter form W.3077 locally overprinted "FALKLAND ISLANDS AND DEPENDENCIES" in large type and franked Map 1s., with short message and addressed to zoologist Colin Bertram at the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge by James Wordie at Neny Fjord, backstamped Port Stanley Feb. 19 transit, vertical fold. Ex Cottis. Photo. James Wordie, veteran of Shackleton's epic 1914 expedition, was one of the advisory committee of three appointed to oversee Operation Tabarin and subsequently visited the bases in the summer of 1946-47. Herbert at Hope Bay bearing 1/2d., 1d. and 11/2d. (slightly overpaid), (Nov. 19) from Anvers Island franked T.A.E. 21/2d. and 1959 (May 7) photographic postcard with message written by Peter Forster on Stonington Island reporting the closure of the base, franked 1d. and posted at Stanley. Ex Cottis. Photo. The Stonington Island party had been obliged to evacuate the base and on Mar. 7 had sledged to Horsehoe Island from where they were picked up by U.S. helicopters and flown to the "John Biscoe" off Adelaide Island, duly arriving at Port Stanley on Apr. 27.
