WEYMOUTH - LETTER TO "TOTTNES" "P. THE EXON CARRIER" REF. "FOOTE POST OF CORNEWALL" ETC.; Attractive 12 Apr. 1620 EL (minor wear; recipient's trial address annotations on reverse) from "Waymouthe" to "Tottnes" endorsed "p. the Exon Carrier" and unusually also endorsed "dated the 12th of April 1620" both on the front; the contents mention that "Two dayes past, I wrote you in hast per the foote post of Cornewall, to be left at Ashburton". Family contents with mention of a £200 debt and the King [James I] having commandeered all Portland stone production for his own purposes, with the result that the sender's new house was delayed! Rare pre-Post Office provincial privately carried letter. [A similar Dec. 1620 EL but without the carrier endorsement in Cavendish's 'Adrian Almond' Dec. 2012 sale, lot 531, realised £360 +BP.] Exhibition Quality. (Image)
