1796 (May 3) entire headed "Sydney, New South Wales" from Lieut David Collins to his solicitor Charles Cox in London. Believed to have been carried by hand on the Marquis Cornwallis, endorsed "1/-" for the postage from Gravesend to London. Pre-1800 correspondence from Australia is exceptionally rare - this is believed to be the earliest letter in private hands..
[David Collins came out with the First Fleet, became Judge Advocate for the NSW Corps, established the unsuccessful settlement of Sorrento in 1803 and then went on to establish Hobart Town. Very little correspondence from David Collins is in private hands, with most being in public collections.] (Image1)
