1948 Operation Sinbad (Jul 21) commercial cover to Perth with 1/- Lyrebird tied by Macquarie Island cds, hand-drawn registration cachet, transit backstamps of Sydney, 'RAAF PO RATHMINES/NSW-AUST' & Perth and 'COTTESLOE' arrival backstamp of August 1948, proving that this cover was returned by the emergency flight Catalina. The enclosed lengthy social letter refers to this letter being on the first Antarctic airmail and also ...It is not a bad sort of place...suppose you heard about our tragedy last week...we have not found the body yet...It is so rugged that a couple of miles a day is a good trip.... [On 4.7.1948, engineer Charles Henry Scoble died in a skiing accident when ice on a lake gave way under his weight. Operation Sinbad flew a replacement engineer to Macquarie Island and this cover was went back to be on the return flight. However the Catalina left with only the mail already prepared by the expeditioners and the mail, bought down by the Catalina, did not leave until HMAS Labuan visited in April 1949.] (Image1)
