VERY LATE FAILED POSTAL FRAUD COVER - USED Pl.103 1d RED DISALLOWED & ENDORSED "Used Stamp"; Curious 3 Dec. 1898 env. sent from "NEW CROSS S.E." (Duplex struck partly off edge on front) to "Dove Holes near Buxton" franked with a lightly cancelled but obviously previously used 1d Red (pl.103) and so charged "2D/79" on posting, with the endorsement "Used Stamp" beside the 1d Red which has three m/s "X" marks around it. The sender - the 'Autograph King' Reginald Bray seems to have been intent upon getting the cds of this unusually named Derbyshire village, but the Buxton P.O. applied their cds while there are red manuscript "Not Known" and "Not Known at Dove Holes" markings etc.! Probably the latest attempt to re-use a 1d Red!Cross Reference: DERBYSHIRE, POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image)
