RARE BLUE C.D.S. CANCELLATION ("DERBY") ON 1d RED MISSENT COVER EX GATESHEAD; Remarkable and attractive 8 Feb. 1857 env. from Gateshead to York but Missent further south to Derby; there the very poor cancellation by the Gateshead Sideways Duplex on the 1d Red was noticed and so the stamp was additionally tied by the “DERBY” c.d.s. in blue (smaller lettering than in the Derby Sideways Duplex). No ‘Missent to Derby’ mark was applied, perhaps because the c.d.s. on the stamp (and the second strike on the reverse) were thought sufficient. This is the only recorded example of the blue Derby c.d.s. used to cancel a perf. 1d Red ‘Stars’ (although three examples on the 1d Red imperfs. are known). Exhibition Quality.Cross Reference: SPOONS & SIDEWAYS DUPLEXES, ETC., DURHAM, DERBYSHIRE, CANCELLATIONS (Image)
