1588-1846, Fascinating collection of 10 stampless entires beginning in the 16th century, written-up on album pages, including letter of 1588 carried by Thurn and Taxis foot messenger from Meiningen to Frankfurt, 1616 letter from Malines to Brussels, early rate markings inc. ‘V8’ for 8 stuivers rate on 1694 letter from Mons to Antwerp and 1700 Tournai to Antwerp, a letter of 1776 to Edinburgh from the British diplomat Sir Robert Liston attending the Diet of the Holy Roman Empire in Regensburg (Ratisbon) with detailed contents, as well as a wonderful pair of 1840s letters from Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha with his elaborate calligraphic headings, bearing the Thurn/Taxis concession ‘Coburg’ datestamps in red and formerly sealed by sewing denoting important contents.
