POSTAL HISTORY: 1948 West Berlin (Sep 15) social usage of Posthorn Aerogramme with boxed 'TAXE PERCUE 100 PF/DEUTSCHE POST/BERLIN' printed in red at U/R Michel LF1(I), very fine '(1) BERLIN-CHARLOTTENBURG 2 / J ' machine cancel, minor repaired tear on the flap, Cat €750 (2007). A rare aerogramme. The letter, in German, from a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, speaks of receiving a food parcel in good order & of the 'Air Bridge' now being in its eighth week, concern if the Russians 'get the upper hand', and fears that the Americans might 'leave them in the lurch'. She also refers to a cousin who went to Australia as a Dunera Boy, who volunteered to join the British Army but who lost his life when his ship was torpedoed by the Germans. Poignant but exceptional social history. Berlin was blockaded by the Russians from 24.6.1948 until 12.5.1949, during which time, and for four months afterwards, all supplies into Berlin were brought by air. Up to 13,000 tons per day were delivered over the 15 months period]
