Confederacy, (American Letter Express Co.) Am. Letter Exp. Co., Louisville, Ky., 307 Green. Blue circular handstamp on U.S. 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire addressed to Charlotte C.H., Va., carried to the lines and entered the mails with blue "Nashville, Ten., Aug 4, 1861" cds with matching "Paid" straight line and "10" rate handstamp; partial backflap and skillfully restored along top edge with small portion of express marking added, Very Fine appearance, it is believed that less than 35 southbound American Letter Express usages exist with only five examples recorded with this marking.

Prisoner of war folded letter datelined "Old Capitol Prison", addressed locally to a past acquaintance at the Patent Office, franked with well centered U.S. 1863, 2¢ black (73), some light gum toned perfs at top, tied by "Washington D.C. Dec. 16 '63" cds duplexed with target cancel, boxed "Henry R. Todd" Provost Marshal's Office examiner handstamp (Harrison box type Ia) with manuscript "CWT" initials (Charles W. Thompson); right portion of lettersheet missing, Very Fine, with 2009 P.F. certificate.

Confederacy, Immortal "Confederate 600", Fortress Monroe, Va. Cover franked with four margin 1863, 10¢ greenish blue tied by "Richmond, Va., Sep 11, 1863" cds on cover to "Mr. James P. Irwin, Charlotte, North Carolina", addressee has been crossed out and "Mr. T. W. Dewey" substituted, this is an inside cover from across the lines use as the pencil contents docketing indicates "[9-2-63 Fortress Monroe, Va]", the family correspondence had across the lines prisoner correspondence from Drury Lacy, 23rd VA Infantry, to Thomas W. Dewey, Very Fine.
Scott No. 11c; Estimate $200 - 300.

Lacy was wounded at Chancellorsville May 2, 1863. He was wounded and captured multiple times. Ultimately, he was one of the Immortal 600 confined to Fort Delaware where he was transferred to be held captive under friendly fire as retaliation for the same treatment of Union prisoners. This use is from an unidentified northern prison before confinement to Fort Delaware.
