1863 Wilmington N.C., C.S.A. to Heidelberg, Germany, via England and France. Outbound blockade-run cover from the Watson correspondence, no apparent Nassau or Bermuda datestamps, sent by private ship to Great Britain, reverse with "Liverpool 'Ship' Mr 28, 1863" framed handstamp and red "Ship-Letter, London" (3.28) transit cds, framed "GB/1F60c" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp and Calais (3.29) arrival backstamp, blue ms. "1fl 15" due rating (France 3 x 8 decimes = 72kr plus Baden 1x 3kr = 75kr - 1fl 15), detailed Mar. 30, 1863 receipt docketing on reverse, Very Fine, Census BO-Oth-12, ex-Walske.

A RARE CSA BLOCKADE-RUN COVER TO GERMANY.

Henry Watson Jr. was a lawyer and planter in Greensboro Ala., during the Civil War he relocated to Europe, his papers (including the letter carried in this cover) can be found in the Duke University Libraries.

Blockade runners were essential for vital supplies and correspondence with Europe.

1863 (Jul. 7) Wilmington N.C. to Heidelberg, Germany via Charleston and Nassau. Light buff cover to Henry Watson in Heidelberg, Germany, routed to Charleston and carried by blockade-runner Alice to Nassau arriving Jul. 7th, it entered the British Mails with partial red "Nassau, Paid, JY 11 63" cds with red crayon "2/8" double-weight credit rating, blue crayon "2" pence local rating, carried by Cunard Line Corsica from Nassau Jul. 31st to New York arriving Aug. 4th, then Cunard Line Africa from Boston Aug. 5th to Queenstown arriving Aug. 15th, red London Paid (8.17) transit datestamp and "PD" oval, Calais (8.18) transit datestamp, reverse with Paris-Strasbourg (8.18) and Heidelberg (8.19) framed arrival backstamps, pencil Aug. 19th receipt docketing, explicit route notations on back "Via Nassau, London, Calais, Paris, Strasbourg" as often found on this correspondence, Very Fine, ex-Walske.
