Guatemala, 1871, Coat of Arms, 1c Ocher. In combination with 1871, Coat of Arms, 5c bister brown (2) on 1871 cover to Ramon Rodriguez in Mazatenango, tied together by barred 1 oval handstamp with "Correos, Guatemala, Oct 28, 1871" origin cds; cover file fold and lightly cleaned, otherwise Very Fine, an exhibition item of the foremost importance, ex-Spycher.

AN EXTREMELY RARE 1871 COAT OF ARMS COMBINATION FRANKING TO MAZATENANGO.

Goodman records five first issue covers with the 1 centavo adhesive, including this example, however a further example has come to light (F-W Lange collection) since the handbook was published; of these six covers just three were used in the 'decimal' period (March 1 1871 until January 26, 1872) prior to Guatemala reverting to their former currency in January 1872 and there are only two recorded 6 centavo internal frankings.

Recorded by Goodman on page 52, who records just this one cover with a pair of 5 centavos adhesives, there are however, two recorded thus - another from the same correspondence (ex-Miguel Ricoy) with one stamp repaired.

Block of 8 and vertical pair, tied on piece by light indistinct cancels; small imperfections as to be expected but a remarkable and extremely rare block, Very Fine appearance, the used so-called "block of twelve" recorded is in fact a block of six, strip of three, pair and single, ex-Hubbard & Spycher.

Well centered example used on cover to Paris, France endorsed via "Panama", tied by barred "1" oval handstamp with blue "Correos, Guatemala, Set 27, 1872" origin cds, via British P.O. with Colon, transit cds, boxed "G.B., 1F60c" accountancy handstamp and "12" décimes due handstamp upon arrival, reverse with red London transit and receiving cds's, Very Fine and choice, the overseas rate was reduced to 20c per half ounce from the end of January 1872, ex-Hubbard & Spycher, with 2009 Moorhouse certificate.

An early usage of a single example on the famous 1878 part cover to London, England from the Matthews correspondence, endorsed "via Belize" with an additional 2r single reduced out at right, tied by bold barred "18" oval handstamp with matching "Correos de Zacapa, Ago 3, 1878" origin cds, in combination with British Honduras 1877, 1sh green, perf. 14 (12) applied in transit and tied by barred "O" oval handstamp, matching "Belize, Au 15, 78" cds at right, as Guatemala had yet to join the U.P.U., London cds of arrival (Sept 12) on reverse; reduced at right for better display, illustrated prior to this event in Goodman (page 86), otherwise Very Fine, ex-L. Cervera, Lange & Spycher, with 2009 Moorhouse certificate.

Single franking on cover to Berlin, Germany, tied by neat barred "25" oval handstamp, with superb strike of red "Correos, Coban, Ago 28, 1878" origin cds, "T/1-10" accountancy mark in blue (Guatemala did not join the UPU until 1881) in London and charged "125" pfg. due in blue, reverse with red Guatemala City and London transit cds's, Extremely Fine, this cover is unrecorded by Goodman, however a similar cover from this correspondence is illustrated on page 239, with 1997 Moorhouse certificate.
