BLACK OVERPRINT: 'G.P.' on Perf 10 1d deep green, tied to entire wrapper by GPO cds apparently of DE20/71. Superb: one of the finest of all Departmental covers. The stamp is rated R. Number 3 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of only three 'G.P.' covers.
The addressee, Wilhelm Ottomar Gerke, arrived at Adelaide in 1847 aboard the German ship 'Hermann von Beckerath'. He must have been of some prominence to have been appointed Justice of the Peace.

The similar variety on Perf 11½-12½xRouletted 1d in 'Tamiami' sold for $1916.
