EARLY PRINTED MATTER COVER - CHARGED POSTAGE DUE BECAUSE OF TOO MANY MANUSCRIPT WORDS; 5/6 July 1856 EL (unsealed; minor toning) from St. Malo (sender's blue "ROUTAGE COMMon. TRANSIT" cachet at top left) to St. Servan (fair 7 July cds on flap), franked only for the Printed Matter 5c rate - with 5c Green (4m; close to v. wide) tied by a fine dotted diamond "3176" - with matching v. fine "ST. MALO" cds alongside. The contents are a partly printed letter of advice; but it has been completed with far more than the 5 manuscript words allowed for the special 5c Printed Matter rate. And so it has been endorsed "Timbre insuffisant" and charged "5[c]" - i.e. the regular letter-rate of 10c minus the 5c prepaid with the stamp. A very rare example of Printed Matter that broke the rules and so was charged Postage Due. Exhibition Quality. CONTRARY TO REGULATIONS PRINTED MATTER RATE COVERS CHARGED POSTAGE DUE; 5 Feb. 1865 EL (ref. enclosed paper sample from Odessa/Paris; with some wear and slight stains mainly along left-hand edge) sent from Lyon to Nimes with the 1c tied by the Lyon "2145" Numeral, but it was not sent inside a paper band and so was charged the full letter-rate and endorsed with "0.29" postage due (30c minus the 1d prepaid with the stamp) on the front. Plus 4 Aug. 1871 paper band (which had originally contained printed contents) with 1c Pair tied by v. fine "ST. ETIENNE DE MONTLUC" cds's, but it was posted in a street letter-box (instead of at a PO counter as per regulations) and so was charged "28ct" Postage Due (the full 30c letter rate minus the 2c prepaid in stamps). Very rare pair. (2 covers) [Ex Gavin Fryer.] Cross Reference: PRINTED MATTER BY POST, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS (Image)

TWICE-POSTED WRAPPER - CASH-PAID AT 2c RATE THEN REPOSTED WITH EXTRA 8c (DUE TO MISSING PAPER BAND); Unique(?) 25 Mar. 1872 E (mourning paper - probably a printed death notice) assessed to postage twice on the same day; initially paid 2c in cash as Printed Matter - with "1e" (1st post of the day) "BELLENAVES" 25 Mar. cds and v. fine red boxed "PD" (both still just visible beneath the stamps added later in the day). Then the PO found the sender later in the day to explain that the 2c rate needed a paper band wrapper and so - for this letter without the band - a further 8c was needed for the 10c letter rate. As a result there are strips of 3 and 5 1c stamps tied by the "2e" (2nd post of the day) "BELLENAVES" 25 Mar. cds, and there is a partial Clermont Ferrand arrival cds (26 Mar.) on the flap. Astonishing item that shows both rates paid on the same day. [Ex Gavin Fryer.] Cross Reference: PRINTED MATTER BY POST (Image)
