DE LA BOURSE" cds with framed "PD" and London arrival cds also on front, carried on the Le Duquesne three days later landing at Ouanne in occupied territory and concealed in champagne baskets, 23 Nov. 1870 EL (faint water stains on rear) 'Par Ballon Monte' to London franked 40c and tied by faint Paris star cancel with a "PARIS/DES VLLES-HAUD RTES" cds alongside with two different London Paid cds on front for 2 Dec. 1870 and carried by the ill-fated 'Ville d'Orleans' balloon, from which one of the four mail-bags (including this cover) was ditched into the North Sea when the balloon was blown off course with the mail rescued by a fishing boat and sent to London where it was dried out and forwarded, the balloon continued to Norway where it crashed and 5 Dec. 1870 'PAR BALLON MONTE' Journal Poste no. 8 EL (defective and repaired) to NY franked 30c (2) + 20c tied or cancelled by indistinct dotted star numeral cancels and latter tied by "NEW YORK PAID ALL" d.s. VERY RARE 1871 POSTAGE DUE COVER - Manuscript uprating of postage due. Rouen local letter of September 1871. Further to the official rates increase of August 1871, the rate for unstamped mail was also increased from 15c to 25c. However, new postage due stamps were not made available until early September leading to some offices amending the 15c stamps with a manuscript 2.
