1791-1814 Documents and letters on various military, revolutionary or administrative matters with many printed letterheads and signatures of military figures or officials, printed notices and proclamations, certificates for wounds, army service, military discharge, etc., military letters, letters from occupied territories and various armies, documents from Army of Egypt and "armee d'angleterre" noted, 1800 Spanish passport, printed letterheads of Jerome Napoleon, Joubert, Fririon, Druion, Moreau, Colle, Willot, Milei-Mureau, Ernouf, Balland, Rey, Berra, Jourdeuil, Demauelle, Petiet, etc., a few postally used. An extensive lot that could repay careful viewing. (c.160).

1796-1811 Entire letters with long 1796 letter written in French posted from London to Jersey; 1803 entire letter from Lintz to Vienna, the address panel endorsed "de Lintz"; 1803 entire written and addressed in Russian, large wax seal impressed with the Russian double headed eagle; and 1811 entire letter from Copenhagen to an Officer in the Uhlan Corps at Hiortespring. (4).

1814-16 Letters and documents all dated after Napoleon's abdication in April 1814, some dating from the "100 days" period between his return in March 1815 and the Battle of Waterloo in June, a few relating to allied forces in France, with letters signed by Marshal Suchet, Duc D'Albuferra (2) or the Duc D'Otrante, several postally used with official cachets (3), entire letter from a wounded soldier in hospital at Nancy, etc., also printed "Overture from Napoleon presented to Parliament, May 1815" and 1816 "Papers relating to the residence of Napoleon Bonaparte at St. Helena". (34).

1870-71 Entire letters to Tours, all franked 20c with datestamps of Paris R. du Pont-Neuf and Tours arrival backstamps, dated 8 Oct 70 with 17 Oct arrival c.d.s flown on the "Washington" or "Louis Blanc", 24 Oct 70 with 4 Nov arrival c.d.s flown on the "Vauban", or 10 Jan 71 with 16 Jan. arrival c.d.s probably flown on the "Kepler". A good correspondence, all three fine. (3).

1870 (Dec 8/9) Printed "Gazette des Absents" No. 14 dated 7 Dec., two examples both to London flown on the "General Renault", one franked 30c (faults), the other franked 40c orange (overpaid 10c), the first with the printed supplement of 8 Dec. enclosed, the other with the message including "I send you a letter marked B for Metz. Kindly enclose it in another envelope with the same directions, do your possible to send the letter at any cost. I think through Germany or Belgium you may be able to do it". The first with a few faults mainly to the upper flap, the other fine. (2).

1870-71 Ballon Montes sent within France with Oct. 25th printed lettersheet franked by two 10c stamps flown on the "Vauban", the other three all printed "Gazette des Absents" franked 20c comprising No. 14 posted on Dec. 10th with red c.d.s flown on the "Ville de Paris", No. 16 posted on January 3rd flown on the "Newton" and No. 20 posted on Dec. 28th flown on the "Bayard". A few small faults though all largely fine. (4).

1901 India 1/2a stationery envelope uprated 1/2a to England, both stamps cancelled by "B" within circle of bars, backstamped "ZAILA / B.O / SOMALI COAST" (Feb 2) and at Aden and Macclesfield. Opened out, the reverse shortened by 6mm (with no loss to any postmarks), an attractive cover that displays well. Photo on Page 32. (Image1)

1857-1938 Covers and cards to France, a correspondence to Grenoble or Lyon including Morocco cards with 1899 Mazagan 20c local post card posted into the French P.O with "T" handstamp but no postage due collected (central vertical fold) and postcard with Morocco Agencies 10c posted into the French P.O at Tangier so charged 20c, 1900 cover from Bangkok with Siam 12c removed in transit then reapplied tied by Ligne N datestamp, 1894-1903 covers from Indo China (11, one with Hanoi A Haiphong cancels), 1900 cover from German P.O in Tangier franked 5pf, 1878 Italy formula postcard posted unpaid handstamped "Francatura obligatorni" reposted franked 5c with the handstamp crossed through, Austria 1910 5h wrappers with "Deutschen und Osterreichischen Alpen Vereines" precancels (3), items from Funchal (2), Senegal, Beyrout, etc., a few faults. (160).

1870 (Oct 16) - 1871 (Jan 11) Small entire letters written at St. Helier, Jersey, to Mr Delapalme in Paris, all carried to France and posted franked 20c (4) or 10c, the first two endorsed "par ballon monte" or "Par Ballon" in the hope that they could be flown into the city, all five however detained and delivered after the siege had ended. The letters comprise Oct. 16, posted at Le Mans with "2188" cancel, no datestamps; Oct. 27, posted at Lille with "2048" cancel and Feb. 23 arrival c.d.s; Oct. 28, posted at Tours after the siege with Feb. 3 c.d.s. and "3097" cancel, endorsed as received on Feb. 19; Oct. 21, posted in Paris after the siege with star cancel, no datestamps but endorsed as received on March 2; Jan. 11, posted in Paris after the siege with 10c (corner fault) tied "35" star cancel and Paris Ministere De Finances c.d.s of Feb. 3 (the first day of renewed postal services after the siege). c.1700-1840 Letters and documents including revenue stamped paper (12), 1746 postal documents (11) and 1782-91 printed proclamations regarding the postal service (3), 1771 map of France, a few postally used letters with 1764 entire letter from the Citadel of Lille to an army Captain at Carpanburg with "LILLE" handstamp, 1762 entire letter to a soldier with "DE / TOULOUSSE" handstamp, 1765 manuscript "d'avignon", also a twelve page handwritten document in Spanish headed "Don Philippe" apparently signed by the King and others, 1840 letter signed "Louis Philippe", etc., and a bound volume "Lettres de William Mackenzie a sa femme" containing 1836-71 letters including thirteen 1870-71 letters written from St. Germain en Laye during the Franco-Prussian War. (48 + book).

Military Mail. 1803 Entire letter and covers with 1803 "ARM. D'ITALIE" (stained, probably disinfected), stampless covers with "30" charge marks and datestamps of "ARMEE D'ORIENT / 2E CORPS" (1855, enclosed letter from Camp Chassara, Crimea), "CORPS EXPEDITIONNAIRE D'ITALIE / 1E DIVISION" (1857) or "CORPS EXP. MEXIQUE / BAU A" (1864), and an 1866 cover bearing 10c + 40c each cancelled "CEM A" in retta with the Mexico c.d.s alongside, the last with part reverse missing. (5).

1853 Cover to Harburg bearing 1853 1fr lake strip of three each tied by "DS2" in retta, the stamps crossed by horizontal crease and all torn into or very close at top, the cover with edge faults and fold at base (with some tape repairs to reverse), but a very scarce franking. Accountancy Marks. 1859-70 Stampless entire letters and covers all from or via France with accountancy handstamps comprising "F/27", "F/33" (2, to Finland or Russia), "F/36", "FR/1F78c" or "FR/2F", some scarce. (7).

1867-96 Covers (5), postcard and a front, including 1867-75 entires franked 80c to Montevideo, 1f to Tampico or 1f.60 to Vera Cruz, 1875 unpaid entire from India to Paris with French arrival c.d.s of 1 Jan 76 and "T" handstamp (first day of French entry into U.P.U, so presumably the first day of use of the French "T" handstamp?, faults), 1896 Visit of the Tsar postcard, etc. (7).

1873-74 Covers from Boulogne to Aden franked 25c pair + 80c both with "ADEN STEAMER POINT" arrival backstamps. (2).

Military Mail. 1919-22 Stampless covers and cards with French army or naval post office datestamps from Zagreb (2), Constantinople (3), Upper Silesia (1922, A.P.O 184, used by forces overseeing the plebiscite), Thrace (2), Hungary or Albania, scarce. (10).

1936 Air 50f Ultramarine, lower left corner marginal, lightly mounted mint. S.G. 541, £1,000.

1866-1943 Covers and cards from Madagascar (7), Senegal, Algeria, Comoro Islands, French Oceanic Settlements, Reunion, Syria (2), Guadeloupe, French Congo (3), Upper Senegal & Niger (1907 card to a prison superintendent at Devils Island, French Guyana), or French Occupation of Fezzan, an unusual group, some scarce cancels. (20).

French Sudan/Djibouti/Somali Coast. 1897-1930 Covers and cards with 1897-1904 stampless soldiers covers from French Sudan (4); 1899-1902 covers, cards and a wrapper front with French Somali Coast stamps (5, two cancelled by octagonal La Reunion A Marseille sea post datestamps); and 1930 Djibouti to Addis Abeba second flight cover, a few faults. (10).

Indo-China/Cambodia. 1902-39 Covers and cards with 1904 official free card with incorrect "Haiphong A Hanoi" T.P.O c.d.s crossed out and replaced by "Hanoi A Haiphong" c.d.s; 1907 Tourane Paquebot handstamp; 1907 card with Indo-China 5c pair tied Savan-Nakhet, Laos c.d.s; 1902-07 cards from Cambodia with datestamps of Kratie, Stung Treng (2) or Angkor - Les Ruines; 1902 French Colonial issue postage dues used at Saigon; and 1939 cover with Indo-China postage dues. The last two a little stained, otherwise fine. (9).

Madagascar - P.O.W Mail. 1915 Stampless cover from Lubeck, sent via the Bureau International de la Paix in Berne, to a P.O.W at Fort Duchesne, Antananarivo, with arrival c.d.s and censor cachet, very scarce.

New Caledonia. 1917-18 Printed patriotic envelopes depicting flags of the allies or the French flag with "Vive la France, let it Flourish", both posted from Bourail to France, fine and attractive. (2). Photo on Page 44. (Image1)

Senegal. 1860-65 Stampless entire letters (2) and a cover with blue Goree or St. Louis c.d.s, or circular "DIRECTION DE LA POSTE AUX LETTRES / ST. LOUIS / (SENEGAL)", all fine. (3).

1807-08 Entire letter with red "No - / GRANDE-ARMEE" handstamps comprising No. 10 on 1807 letter from Arentsdorf, and No. 16 on 1808 letter from Javer, Silesia, both fine. (2).

1806-12 Entire letters all with "No - / GRANDE-ARMEE" handstamps comprising No. 14 in red on 1806 letter from Roth to Grande Armee 1st Corps Paymaster at Aussbach; No. 16 in red on 1812 letter from Langun; No. 31 in red on 1808 letter from the environs of Kraipitz in Silesia; and No. 48 in black on 1808 letter from Vittime, a few faults, all reasonable strikes.
