France: 1622 (Aug.) letter instructing ‘Safe conduct for the three suburbs of the town of SŽzanne (Marne), signed by Charles Gonzague, Duc de Nevers et de Rethel instructing all ‘masters of the camp, chief captains and leaders of the people of war’ not to not take lodgings in any of the three suburbs of SŽzanne en Brie, nor to take anything from there without payment, and to report anyone contravening these rules to the nearest Marshal. Written during the last religious wars of suppression of the Huguenots with the intention of preventing the much accepted ‘bellum se ipsum alet’ principle from causing devastation of the area. Photo.
