1792 (Nov 30): Entire letter datelined 'à Liège, le 30 9bre. l'an 1er. de la Rêpublique française et de la libertê de france, belges et liegeois' addressed to Limoux to the care of the Mayor, with outstandingly patriotic letter calling for people to defend (and wanting various named soldiers to be allowed home on leave) the revolution and the country 'la patrie en danger' and recounting the victory at Liege for the Republican forces in May and the recent victory at Jemappes (Nov 1792), struck with (very fine for this) two line EXPEDITION / DE LA BELGIQUE in red (Reinhardt = 1'250 pts). Malta 1798 (June 11): Entire letter, an eye-witness account of the Siege of Malta (taken the following day by Napoleon's forces), written on board the "La Sensible" (23 Prairial an 6) "nous arrivons devant Valletta, ville capital Malte" and the letter goes on to mention Bonaparte's plans for the invasion of Egypt which were quickly put into motion - Bonaparte stayed but six days on the island but left 4'000 troops to garrison Malta and then sailed directly on to Egypt. The 'Sensible' avoided the Battle of the Nile, sailing westwards where this letter was mailed with straight line CADIZ handstamp in red and charged '20' due on receipt. D'OBSERV. / DES CÔTES DE L'OCEAN' in black (Reinhardt = 750 pts). General Murat, in command of two Corps, was ordered by Napoleon to occupy Madrid without hostilities. On March 23, 1808 Murat ordered Dupont's 2nd Corps of Observation of the Gironde (25'000 men) and Moncey's Corps of Observation of the Ocean Coasts (29'000 men) to garrison Madrid. Major de Keyser of the 119th Regiment in bivouac at Brisalina, 20 leagues from Vitoria, Spain struck on front with three line 'BAU. GAL. CORPS / D'OBSERV. DES PYRENEES / OCCIDENTALES' in black (Reinhardt = 1'000 pts). A fine strike of this scarce marking, the letter describes the Battle of Medina del Rio Seco at which 22'000 Spaniards, parts of the Armies of Galicia (under Blake) and Castile (under Cuesta) were defeated by 14'000 French troops under Marshall Bessières. The battle secured the lines of communication between Madrid and Bayonne. (Image 1) (Image)
