Portuguese Colony of the Cape Verde Islands 1885 (May 4): Cover from San Vincente to Lisboa, bearing Cabo Verde 1877 Crown 10 r. green, perf. 13½ in combination with 40 r. yellow in the extremely rare imperforated variety, tied by large oval "CORREIO DO S. VINCENTE / CABO VERDE 4 MAIO 85" datestamp. Reverse with "CORREIO LISBOA 10 MAI. 85" arrival cds. Cover with some toning, especially on reverse and some edge wear, nevertheless a most rare commercial and contemporary use of this imperforated stamp. An extremely rare usage of a 'Crown' cover with an imperforated adhesive, one of two known.rnNote: The contemporary use of the 40 reis imperforated was discussed in the literature (see Stephen Washburne, PPS 105/14), but this cover and a comparable one from the collection of Philip E. Parker (Antonio Torres sale (Oct. 1993), lot 463) prove this. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image)
