Great Britain, 1840, 2 d., Mulready envelope, sent from Revensglass via Cumbria to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg/Germany, neatly cancelled by red MC, reverse with a large red RAVENSGLASS dc and transit LONDON/AU 7 1840, the rate to Oldenburg via France at this time was 1s4d so the manuscript charge at upper left PAID 1/2 would be correct when added to the original 2d for the Mulready, however this appears to have been deleted and the letter re-rated at lower left Paid 1s/, the m/s 10 at right is the tax of 10 Silbergroschen, a magnificent and unique destination, this being the only recorded use of a 2d Mulready to Germany with proof of delivery, ex Mayflower BPA Cert 2010, SUP! Great Britain, 1850, Mr. Albert Smith's Overland Mail envelope depicting the Ship, Camel and Railway elements of the overland mail route. One of the few surviving examples of this fine pictorial envelope posted from Tottenham Court Road and addressed in Smith's handwriting. Albert Smith, known as the Baron of Piccadilly presented dramatic dioramas on the perils of the overland mail both in London and the provinces. A very rare survival illustrated on page 317 of British Pictorial envelopes of the 19th Century by Bodily Jarvis and Hahn, cover to SWANSEA, red PAID NO 18 1850 and blue Tottenham 1 D.
