1871 GEORGE BROWN COVER to SCOTLAND, a cover from the publisher of the Toronto Globe newspaper and one of the Fathers of Confederation, addressed to his wife who was visiting family in Edinburgh, posted at Toronto on July 22, 1871 just 2 days after British Columbia joined the Canada Confederation and likely contained information about the historic event, the cover was routed by train to New York to meet the scheduled July 26th departure of the Cunard "SS RUSSIA", the ship sailed on time with arrival at Queenston-Ireland on August 4th + forwarded via train to Dublin + Coastal Packet to Liverpool noting a "PAID US PACKET" handstamp at 3:00am on August 7th + immediately transferred to the Edinburgh morning express train where it arrived at 8:00pm the same day, the 2¢ Small Queen stamps were not yet available and the 8¢ British Packet rate was paid by a mixed franking 2¢ Large Queen and a pair of 3¢ misperfed Small Queen stamps that had to be scissor cut, the stamps are tied by three nice Toronto fancy cork cancels, a great historical cover with great markings, VF est ($375+ US) (Image)
