1919 (22 Feb) Canadian YMCA corner cachet "On Active Service" cover to Ottawa, with "Orderly Room 259th Bn Can. Rifles (Siberia)" dated cachet, also a fine strike of the "Field Post Office Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force" Feb 26 cancel, below, fine cover from a member of the small Canadian contingent in Siberia (the 259th Battalion, Canadian Rifles, was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force Siberia, embarked for Russia on 22 and 26 December 1918, disembarked at Vladivostok on 12 and 15 January 1919 serving with the 16th Infantry Brigade as part of the Allied Forces in eastern Russia until 19 May 1919. 1933 Balbo Flight Surcharge, $4.50 on 75c yellow brown, partially doubled surcharge, clearly visible in the numbers of the date and value (partial offset of the surcharge on reverse as well), position 1 of the setting and the only one recorded unused (there was an example used on cover in the Cyril Harmer collection), small surface mark at left (seems to be from the surcharging process), very fine in all respects, 2010 BPA certificate (Unitrade C18iii, listed but unpriced) (Cat No. C18var) (Image)

1919 (12 July) "Martinsyde" Supplementary mail (only 25 flown) by pilots Raynham & Morgan, cover franked by $1 Trans-Atlantic surcharge tied by St. John's machine duplex, sent to London, with arrival markings, small part of backflap torn away, otherwise fine, signed Bolaffi, Colla, etc., with 1965 Bolaffi certificate, also with a 1943 Francis Field certificate and explanation (as the flight was delayed, the mail bag, originally made up on May 18, was opened on July 12, and an additional 25 covers, all franked with the $1 surcharge, were added. The flight crashed on takeoff, and Capt. Raynham subsequently went to England by ship, forgetting to turn the mail over to the Post Office until January 7, 1920, hence these covers were not backstamped until then). (Image)
